The theme of my Zine is YOLO (You Only Live Once). Usually, when people say yolo it's right before making a risky decision or spending money on an experience which I believe is only half of the philosophical idea that is YOLO. In order to divert the audiences expectation of inside of my zine I filled the cover with a collage of remarkable moments in my life. Times when I embraced new experiences and truly embodied the YOLO spirit. I made sure to make it as colorful and dynamic as possible to execute this idea.
Inside, however, I wanted to show that YOLO also encompasses appreciating the simpler aspects of life. It's crucial not to overlook these moments, as life moves quickly. If we're always waiting for grand occasions, we risk missing out on the joy that daily life can bring. So inside I wanted it make a very simple, relaxing, structured grid of photos with different themes of what makes me feel like yolo. I was trying to make a stark contrast between the cover and the inside however I believe I went a bit too extreme. And I wasn't sure what to do in illustrator so I wanted to involve the reader somehow in order for them to sit with the pages more and put themselves in my yolo experience. So I made simple little drawings of mice that they could color.
In terms of execution, while I am pleased with the cover, I believe the interior didn't quite meet my expectations. If given a chance to revise, I would extend the collage to each page, rather than using Illustrator. Despite this, I am fond of the concept and may revisit this idea in the future with a different approach.
